Isaac Cardenas

Loyola Marymount University, 2020

SCholar bio

Isaac is a Theology major at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California and expects to graduate in 2020. Isaac’s calling is to be in the service of others. His goal is to complete a Master of Divinity and to become a hospital chaplain to provide support and solace in hours of great need.

Isaac is the son of Jose and Lilia Cardenas, both from La Ladera, Michoacán. One of his most cherished moments is when his parents told him that they were “proud that [he] was studying something that filled [his] spirit” and he wishes that others students will also pursue “lo que nos llena.” Of his parents’ hometown Isaac has said, “It is this deep sense of community that makes me proud to be a descendent of La Ladera!”

In honor of Rosalina Diaz’s legacy, all RDO scholars are asked to give back in some way to the community of La Ladera. Isaac surprised us all by donating a portion of his well-earned scholarship to restore a beloved fixture in La Ladera, a 9-foot mural of La Virgen de Guadalupe painted by his tio Jaime and located for decades at the center of La Ladera, La Jolla, and San Miguel.
